GO DEEP INTO THE WOODS [2007-2010]
Using information gleaned from online communities, I locate and photograph sites where men meet for furtive sexual encounters in public parks. In these lush settings, the overgrowth blurs distinctions between what we consider public and private realms, and nature becomes a complicit part of this taboo sexual activity. In contrast with the sterile tameness typically associated with parks, this world proves to be wild, seductive, and darkly beautiful.
I photograph the traces left behind, leaving it up to the viewer to imagine the scenarios that may have unfolded. These images suggest the complicated interplay between danger, secrecy, tenderness, and fantasy that underlies this world's illicit allure. Excerpted from an online post, the title, Go Deep Into the Woods, is an invitation for viewers to seek, if perhaps only metaphorically, this hidden and secret world.
